The Project

Queer people might be invisible, but they are everywhere. They are human beings with desires, goals, and dreams. They go to school, they work, they fall in love, they travel, they fall sick, they party, they have sex, they worship God. They are you, they are your family, they are your neighbors, they are your colleagues, they are your countrymen, they are people, and they are here.

This project documents the lives of queer Nigerians, home and abroad. It is dedicated to these beautiful, wonderful lives, ungovernable beings who shapeshift through the world, who thrive despite, in spite of, and above all. It’s for the brave, brave ones who insist on their humanity when the world would rather annihilate them.

Scope

As a writer, I am interested in little moments that make up existence, those tiny moments where meaning is negotiated in everyday life, like the moment a person realizes a relationship has come to an end, or the moment a person decides they are no longer interested in playing pretend with family members. Some people call these kinds of moments “personal” or “domestic” to reflect their micro-nature and to distinguish them from large, enveloping social and political upheavals.

Yet, these micro, seemingly ordinary moments are the bread and butter of human existence. I am interested in how everyday people navigate and make sense of these little moments and how these moments connect to broader social, political, economic, and technological aspects of human life. Think of this project as documenting slices of queer life. The ultimate goal is to visibilize queer existence in a world that would rather render queer existence invisible.

What to expect

Every month, I’ll bring you two stories about people navigating everyday issues. These stories will explore a range of micro themes and moments. I will have a one-hour conversation with each person and whip up a feature story or profile from that conversation. That feature/profile is what you will see on this page. Stories will be anonymous to protect the privacy and safety of the individuals.

Subscribe so you’ll be the first to know when we have a new story!
